SAULT HEALTH ADOLESCENT CARE CENTER

In June 2005, a needs assessment of parents, students and teachers was conducted. Adolescents and parents stated that barriers for adolescent care were missing school, missing work for the parent, and the inability to schedule at an agreeable time.

In October 2005, the Chippewa County Health Department with help from the Sault Area Schools was awarded a grant from the Michigan Department of Community Health and the Michigan Department of Education for a School-Based Health Center at an annual allocation of $175,000 through FY 07/08. The center is housed at Sault Area High School, Room 601. Students from Sault High, the Career Center, Malcolm High, and the Sault Middle School will utilize the facility with parental consent. A nurse practitioner  performs primary care services.  Mental health services and substance abuse services are offered. An advisory council was established consisting of professionals, school personnel and parents and they meet quarterly. A student advisory council was also formed and meets on a regular basis.
